Glaciar Perito Moreno (hereafter GPM; 50°30′S and 72°50′W) is a major outlet glacier from the South Patagonia Icefield. In contrast to most Patagonian glaciers, glaciological studies indicate that GPM has been advancing or remained stable during the 20th century. The advances periodically block Canal de los Témpanos creating an ice dam that impounds Brazo Sur–Rico arms of Lago Argentino, raising their elevations, until the water is released in a major outburst flood. Documentary evidence…

Patterns of Tree Establishment Following Glacier-Induced Floods in Southern Patagonia

Whereas tree establishment after large-scale disturbances such as fires, avalanches, and landslides have been documented for Patagonian forests, information on forest recovery following floods is

Late-glacial fluctuations of two southern Patagonia outlet glaciers revealed by high-resolution seismic surveys

Abstract Lago Argentino hosts various calving glaciers, among them the famous Perito Moreno. Whereas the onland late Pleistocene–Holocene glacial history is rather well constrained, the submerged

The submerged footprint of Perito Moreno glacier

Evidence of two subaqueous moraine systems both in the Canal de Los Témpanos and in the Brazo Rico are interpreted as the evidence of the most pronounced advance of Perito Moreno glacier during the mid-Holocene cooling event that characterized this sector of the Southern Hemisphere.

Depositional setting of the southern arms of Lago Argentino (southern Patagonia)

ABSTRACT Lago Argentino hosts a series of calving glaciers originating from the Southern Patagonian Icefield, the largest temperate ice cap of the southern hemisphere. Brazo Rico and Brazo Sur are

Climatic significance of intra-annual bands in the wood of Nothofagus pumilio in southern Patagonia

Intra-annual bands occurred more frequently in the twentieth century than the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and seems to be a response to the combination of a long-term warming trend and a significant decrease in precipitation recorded during the last 100 years in this region of southern South America.
