Abstract Large‐scale control of Australian possums throughout New Zealand uses toxic cereal baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate). These baits are often aerially applied over rough terrain where ground application is impractical. Many small streams flow in these areas, so 1080 baits can potentially fall into them. The ecological effect of 1080 leaching from baits was assessed on freshwater fish and invertebrate communities in four streams using a BACI experimental design. Four sites were… Expand
The effects of single aerial 1080 possum-control operations on common forest birds in the South Island, New Zealand
TLDR
The one-off aerial 1080 treatment had conservation benefits, and effects on birds were nearly all neutral or positive, including bellbirds which increased three-fold in treatment areas. Expand
An updated review of the toxicology and ecotoxicology of sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in relation to its use as a pest control tool in New Zealand
TLDR
Despite over 60 years of research and practical experience, the use of 1080 is still embroiled in controversy, while research efforts continue to improve its target specificity when it is used as a conservation tool or for Tb vector control. Expand

Quantifying contamination of streams by 1080 baits, and their fate in water
TLDR
The findings suggest that the potential number of baits falling into a stream cannot be calculated from the bait application rate and the stream size, and that water quality monitoring programmes used during 1080 drops should be collected within 4–8h of potential contamination to detect presence of 1080. INVERTEBRATES FEEDING ON BAITS USED FOR VERTEBRATE PEST CONTROL IN NEW ZEALAND
This study was initiated in response to concerns that vertebrate pest control operations in New Zealand may be having deleterious impacts on invertebrate populations and, secondarily, onExpand
Bryophytes as invertebrate habitat in two New Zealand alpine streams
TLDR
DecorANA ordination revealed taxonomically distinct invertebrate communities in each stream, and in bryophytes and gravels, illustrating the importance of these plants as oviposition sites, and as protective nurseries for small larvae where they can obtain shelter during floods and consume the abundant food sources available to them. Expand
Stable surface stones as refugia for invertebrates during disturbance in a New Zealand stream
TLDR
It is concluded that stable surface stones were important invertebrate refugia during the spate of a New Zealand gravel-bed stream, and the higher densities of several taxa relative to pre-disturbance levels implied that invertebrates may actively seek stable refugium stones, whereas many leave or are dislodged from unstable stones. Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) residues in longfin eels, Anguilla dieffenbachii, following exposure to contaminated water and food
TLDR
Based on the 1080 concentrations measured in eels in this study, the risk of acute poisoning to humans from eating contaminated eel flesh is considered extremely low, but national and international perceptions and food safety standards have the potential to limit eel exports and/or close an eel fishery if 1080 residue was discovered in tissue. Environmental Stability and Community Persistence: A Multivariate Perspective
TLDR
It is suggested that the effects of environmental stability on community structure should be assessed using a measure that is representative of all the physical characteristics at a study site, and the multivariate instability score goes some way towards achieving this. Expand
