We evaluate the role of a fossil fuel tax and research subsidy in directing innovation from fossil fuel toward renewable energy technologies in the electricity sector. Using a global firm-level electricity patent database from 1978 to 2011, we find that the impact of fossil fuel taxes on renewable energy innovation varies with the type of fossil fuel. Specifically, a tax on coal reduces innovation in both fossil fuel and renewable energy technologies while a tax on natural gas has no…
From Fossil Fuels to Renewables: The Role of Electricity Storage
We analyze the role of electricity storage for technological innovations in electricity generation. We propose a directed technological change model of the electricity sector, where innovative firms
The effects of public industrial policy on renewable energy innovation
The key research question of this thesis is to what extent and what types of public industrial policy and their interactions affect innovation in renewable energy (RE) as a whole and in different RE
Price Changes - Stickiness and Internal Coordination in Multiproduct Firms
We assess empirically the micro-foundations of producers’ sticky pricing behaviour. The intertemporal profit function considered accounts for various functional forms of menu costs. The focus is on
Euler Equations, Subjective Expectations and Income Shocks
In this paper, we make three substantive contributions: first, we use elicited subjective income expectations to identify the levels of permanent and transitory income shocks in a life-cycle
All-Pay Auctions with Affiliated Values
This paper analyzes all-pay auctions where the bidders have affiliated values for the object for sale and where the signals take binary values. Since signals are correlated, high signals indicate a
Households’ Responses to Price Changes of Formal Childcare
The current understanding about how households respond to price changes in formal childcare is not extensive. This study examines this response through a 1998 reform in Norway that introduced a money
Household Bargaining and Spending on Children: Experimental Evidence from Tanzania.
It is frequently assumed that money in the hands of women leads to better outcomes for their children than money in the hands of men. However, empirical and theoretical evidence are mixed. We conduct
Seasonal Social Preferences.
Christmas is when people are expected to act selflessly for the well-being of others, but are people actually more altruistic at this time of the year? Responding to this question poses a challenge
War of Attrition with Affiliated Values
TLDR
The war of attrition between two players when the players’ signals are binary and affiliated is studied and the unique symmetric equilibrium is characterized and the possibility of nonmonotonic symmetric equilibria where the player with a lower signal wins With positive probability is demonstrated.
The Effects of Cognitive and Noncognitive Skills on Migration Decisions.
There is growing evidence that cognitive and noncognitive skills affect the economic and social outcomes of individuals. In this paper, we analyze how they affect the migration decisions of

It follows from Hicks' induced innovation hypothesis that rising energy prices in the last two decades should have induced energy-saving innovation. We formulate the hypothesis concretely using a
Comparing the Costs of Intermittent and Dispatchable Electricity Generating Technologies
Economic evaluations of alternative electric generating technologies typically rely on comparisons between their expected life-cycle production costs per unit of electricity supplied. The standard
