Divide or broadcast: Interrelation of asexual and sexual reproduction in a population of the fissiparous hermaphroditic seastar Nepanthia belcheri (Asteroidea: Asterinidae)
@article{Ottesen1982DivideOB, title={Divide or broadcast: Interrelation of asexual and sexual reproduction in a population of the fissiparous hermaphroditic seastar Nepanthia belcheri (Asteroidea: Asterinidae)}, author={Peter Ottesen and John Scott Lucas}, journal={Marine Biology}, year={1982}, volume={69}, pages={223-233} }
Asexual and sexual reproduction were studied in an intertidal population of Nepanthia belcheri (Perrier) at Townsville, Queensland, Australia, by regular sampling over a year (March 1976-March 1977) and by histological analysis of gonads. Fission reached a peak in early winter (April–June), when about 45% of the population showed evidence of recent fission. Propensity for fission was unrelated to longest arm length. Seven-armed seastars predominated in the population and these underwent fission…

Divide and broadcast: sexual reproduction in the West Indian brittle star Ophiocomella ophiactoides and its relationship to fissiparity
- Environmental Science, Biology
- 1984
The ability both to divide and broadcast appears to be a useful combination for O. ophiactoides: it can recruit reliably at large size to occupy favourable habitats quickly, but, it can still maintain low level dispersal of larvae which could provide escape from deteriorating habitats and the potential to colonize new habitats.
Asexual reproduction and somatic growth of the fissiparous sea star Allostichaster polyplax in New Zealand
- Environmental Science
- 2016
It is suggested that fission and subsequent growth of ramets can sustain demographically stable and geographically isolated populations of A. polyplax and the role of sexual reproduction in population dynamics and connectivity of this species remains equivocal and requires further research on genetic differentiation within and among populations.
Spatial variability in sexual and asexual reproduction of the fissiparous seastar Coscinasterias muricata: the role of food and fluctuating temperature
- Environmental Science
- 2002
It is proposed that the occurrence of apparently fewer fissiparous individuals in habitats where food is abundant is correlated to food supply, and Rapid growth would allow individuals to more quickly reach the size threshold at which fission begins to be sup- pressed, where food supply or feeding time is limiting growth.
Rates of fission, somatic growth and gonadal development of a fissiparous sea star, Allostichaster insignis, in New Zealand
- Environmental Science
- 2008
The authors' field and laboratory results indicate that asexual reproduction in A. insignis predominantly occurs in small, well-nourished individuals, which is similar to that in other fissiparous sea stars.
Sexual and asexual reproduction of Allostichaster capensis (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) in Golfo Nuevo
- Environmental Science
- 2005
Sexual and asexual reproduction of the fissiparous starfish Allostichaster capensis were examined for 24 months at Bahía Kaiser, Golfo Nuevo, Chubut, Argentina, and showed an annual cycle of fission, with the highest frequency in spring and summer, just after spawning.

The absence of recruitment and reproductive organs coupled with a stable population demography indicates that propagation by fission is the only reproductive mechanism for the A. heteractis population.
Natural parthenogenesis, larval and juvenile development, and geographical distribution of the coral reef asteroid Ophidiaster granifer
- Environmental Science, Biology

Parthenogenetic reproduction leading to both stationary and dispersed larvae may be related to the low fecundity and low population densities of this small asteroid.

The histology and cytology of the reproductive process in E. sepositus followed the general pattern found for asteroids, to give rise to an acrosome-bearing, round-shaped spermatozoon.
