Angraecum is the largest genus of subtribe Angraecinae (Orchidaceae) with about 221 species. Madagascar is the center of the diversity for the genus with ca. 142 species, of which 90% are endemic. The great morphological diversity associated with species diversification in the genus on the island of Madagascar offers valuable insights for macroevolutionary studies. Phylogenies of the Angraecinae have been published but a lack of taxon and character sampling and their limited taxonomic…

Phylogenetic climatic niche conservatism and evolution of climatic suitability in Neotropical Angraecinae (Vandeae, Orchidaceae) and their closest African relatives
- Environmental SciencePeerJ
- 2017
A significant level of PNC is confirmed in Orchidaceae, even within taxa exhibiting a transatlantic disjunction, and the evolution of climatic suitability indicated that the adaptation to various climatic conditions is not a factor that has driven speciation within orchids studied.

The evolutionary history of sedges (Cyperaceae) in Madagascar
- Environmental Science, BiologyJournal of Biogeography
- 2021
This work aimed to infer the evolutionary history of sedges in Madagascar, by estimating the number, age and origins of endemic lineages, and how they diversified on the island, and tested contrasting hypotheses of few colonizations but important in situ radiations against a high number of anagenetic colonizations.
Long-spurred Angraecum orchids and long-tongued sphingid moths on Madagascar: a time frame for Darwin’s predicted Xanthopan/Angraecum coevolution
- Biology
- 2017
The phylogenies show that several long-tongued moths and long-spurred orchids probably coevolved on Madagascar since the mid-Miocene, although field data on the moths' levels of polyphagy and pollen transport are lacking.

Evolution of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) as an escape from ecological niche conservatism in Malagasy Bulbophyllum (Orchidaceae)
- Environmental SciencebioRxiv
- 2021
This study qualifies CAM as an evolutionary ‘gateway’ trait that considerably widened the spatial-ecological amplitude of Madagascar’s most species-rich orchid genus, and supports the rarely recognized hypothesis that CAM in tropical epiphytes may be selectively advantageous even in high rainfall habitats.
Slowly but surely: gradual diversification and phenotypic evolution in the hyper-diverse tree fern family Cyatheaceae
- Environmental Science, BiologyAnnals of botany
- 2019
This study indicates that Cyatheaceae is a diverse clade which slowly accumulated morphological, ecological and taxonomic diversity over a long evolutionary period and provides a compelling example of the tropics as a museum of biodiversity.

Molecular systematics and evolutionary trends and relationships in the genus Jumellea (Orchidaceae) : Implications for its species limits
- Biology

The phylogenetic value of growth form, leaf, bract and lip shape, and spur length, presently used for recognizing informal groups within the genus are assessed; and the monophyly of some variable species is tested, finding no support for the informal groups of Jumellea.

Diversification and the adaptive radiation of the vangas of Madagascar
- BiologyProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
- 2012
It is demonstrated that speciation rates in vangas decreased dramatically through time following the colonization of Madagascar, and a method that can accommodate phylogenetically non-random patterns of incomplete taxon sampling in diversification studies is introduced.
Systematics of the Genus Angraecum (Orchidaceae)

This new study was a great improvement over the former one, for it included a systematic key to the various sections which had grown to thirteen in number, and was primarily designed to accommodate species reported only from Madagascar and from the neighbouring islands.

Diversification analyses show that epiphytism is most strongly associated with diversification among epidendroids, followed by expansion into the New World and anther characters that are involved with pollinator specificity, namely early anther inflexion, cellular pollinium stalks and the superposedpollinium arrangement.
