217 Cladistics — parsimony analysis — is a search for hierarchy. Any philosophical rationale for cladistics must therefore justify the assumption that organisms are most appropriately shoehorned into a (mostly dichotomous) non-overlapping hierarchy, rather than some other pattern. Divergent evolution — anagenesis and cladogenesis — is usually invoked. However, many previous workers often described as ‘pattern cladists’ (e.g. Platnick 1979; Nelson & Platnick 1981; Brady 1985, 1994; Brower 2000…
