Data were obtained for six belugas or white whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) instrumented with satellite-linked dive recorders in September-November 1995 in waters near eastern Devon Island, Canada. The mean of the daily maximum depths of dives was 483-665 m for the 31-51 days when maximum depth measurements were taken. The deepest dive recorded was 872 m. Both the dive rate (number of dives per hour to depths > 8 m) and the time at surface (time spent within the uppermost 5 m of the water… Expand

Diving behaviour of adult male white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Svalbard, Norway
White whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Svalbard remain near the coast much of the year, spending most of their time in front of tidewater glaciers. In this article, the diving behaviour of adultExpand
Fall Movements of Belugas ( Delphinapterus leucas ) with Satellite-linked Transmitters in Lancaster Sound, Jones Sound, and Northern Baffin Bay
Six adult belugas, Delphinapterus leucas , (2 males, 4 females) were instrumented with satellite-linked transmitters in Croker Bay, southeastern Devon Island in the Canadian High Arctic inExpand
Movements and Area Use of Belugas, Delphinapterus leucas , in a Subarctic Alaskan Estuary
Seasonal movements of 14 belugas in Cook Inlet, Alaska, were monitored by satellite telemetry between July and March in 2000–03. Whales used waters in the upper Cook Inlet intensively between summerExpand
Dive Behavior of Eastern Chukchi Beluga Whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ), 1998–2008
We provide an exploratory description of the dive behavior of 23 beluga whales of the eastern Chukchi Sea stock, tagged with satellite-linked time and depth recorders at Point Lay, Alaska, betweenExpand
Regional diving behavior of Pacific Arctic beluga whales Delphinapterus leucas and possible associations with prey
Two populations of beluga whales Delphinapterus leucas in the Pacific Arctic make seasonal migrations to regions characterized by diverse bathymetry and hydrography, yet there is limited informationExpand
Surfacing Times and Dive Rates for Narwhals ( Monodon monoceros ) and Belugas ( Delphinapterus leucas )
Time spent at and near the sea surface was measured for 25 narwhals, Monodon monoceros, and 39 belugas or white whales, Delphinapterus leucas, in West Greenland and Canada from 1993 through 1999,Expand
Diving behaviour of long-finned pilot whales Globicephala melas around the Faroe Islands
Three long-finned pilot whales Globicephala melas were equipped with satellite-linked time-depth recorders on the Faroe Islands on 15 July 2000. The purpose was to study the diving behaviour andExpand
Development of an abundance estimate for the eastern Bering Sea stock of beluga 1 whales ( Delphinapterus leucas )
The first dedicated aerial surveys for beluga whales in the Norton Sound/Yukon Delta region of Alaska were flown during May, June and September 1992. During May 1992 surveys, all of the survey areaExpand
Summer and Autumn Movements and Habitat Use by Belugas in the Canadian High Arctic and Adjacent Areas
Twenty-one adult belugas (8M, 13F) were live-captured and instrumented with satellite-linked transmitters in the summer and fall of 1996. Twelve were captured in estuaries along the coast of SomersetExpand
From Greenland to Canada in Ten Days: Tracks of Bowhead Whales, Balaena mysticetus, across Baffin Bay
Five bowhead whales ( Balaena mysticetus ) were instrumented with satellite transmitters in northwestern Disko Bay, West Greenland, in May 2001. Best results were obtained when tags were deployedExpand

An Index of the Relative Abundance of Wintering Belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, and Narwhals, Monodon monoceros, off West Greenland
TLDR
Compared with the surveys in 1981 and 1982, a decline in relative abundance of belugas along West Greenland was evident in 1991 and this decline was significant at a probability level of 0.13 of the bootstrapped distribution of the combined abundance estimate. Expand
