Projections of the locus coeruleus (LC) to the midbrain and hindbrain were analyzed by anterograde transport of the lectin Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L). Following iontophoretic application of PHA-L into the LC, the distribution of labeled axons was analyzed in sections processed for the immunoperoxidase method and in sections processed for double-immunofluorescence staining using antibodies to PHA-L and to dopamine-beta-hydroxylase.
