Abstract Throughout the last larval instar of the sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina the sulphur content of the cuticle increased but at a rate less than that at which the weight of the cuticle increased. Disulphide groups were present in a zone immediately below the epicuticle of newly ecdysed larvae and the zone became wider with growth of the instar.
