SUMMARIES The chemical element profiles of iron-gall ink writing before and after water treatment and deacidification were determined. A 17th century manuscript of rag paper was used in the study. The chemical elemental analysis was performed non-destructively by the Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) method. The concentration profiles of 15 elements ranging from Na to Pb were measured with the precision of 0.3 mm. Quantitative composition of ink and paper was determined and the elemental…

Analysis of iron gall inks by PIXE
A Timeline of Analytical Techniques for Characterization and Treatment of Iron-gall Ink – A Brief Overview of the Last Two Decades
An extensive review of the published literature about the iron-gall inks was done based on searches in the main scientific publications dealing with cultural and historical heritage, chemistry,
The purpose of the project was to develop a method for studying trace elements in eighteenth and nineteenth century printed materials. The elemental content in the ink will be used to distinguish ink
PIXE and IRR analysis of sixteenth-century ink drawings by Luca Cambiaso and his school
Abstract Non-invasive and non-contact analyses were performed on a group of 28 ink drawings ascribed to the sixteenth-century Italian painter Luca Cambiaso and his followers. Drawings analysed in
Estimation of uncertainty in electron probe microanalysis: iron determination in manuscripts, a case study
Abstract.A case study of ISO GUM-based estimation of measurement uncertainty of quantitative surface elemental analysis is presented. The analytical task was the measurement of iron content in the
Micro-extraction and determination of transition metals in historical ink
A minimally invasive approach is described for sampling Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn in iron-gall ink. Filter paper (2 × 5 mm) that is moistened with de-ionized water is used to extract metals from an iron-gall

Ink corrosion : comparison of currently used aqueous treatments for paper objects
The controversial topic regarding active treatment of ink-corroded artefacts still causes concern in the field of paper conservation. Especially, the effectiveness of treatments and their longterm
Phytate: a Potential Conservation Agent for the Treatment of Ink Corrosion Caused by Irongall Inks
L'encre ferro-gallique detruit les manuscrits ainsi que les dessins a la plume. Deux mecanismes sont possibles: l'hydrolyse acide de la cellulose et l'oxidation catalysee par l'ion ferreux. L'acide
