Distributed Computer Systems for Industrial Process Control


Control problems abound in process industries making paper, steel, petrochemicals, and electricity. The process controls that run these industries are a collection of welldefined functions in the form of standard modules interconnected by a communication network. Throughput, response time, operator communication, flexibility, backup, and error recovery needs have stimulated development of automated industrial process control systems in a unique, distributed organization of both hardware and software. This article discusses the common process control functions of such systems and the successful features of distributed architectures. *
