Three ariid fish, Netuma barba, Netuma planifrons and Genidens genidens, use the estuary of the Patos Lagoon (32oS), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, as a nursery and feeding ground in various stages of their life history. A comparative study was made of the temporal and spatial distribution and relative abundance. Seasonal movements were interpreted on the basis of distribution and abundance of the young of these coexisting sea catfishe. Monthly otter trawl samples were made between November, 1979…

Figures from this paper

Distribuição e abundância relativa de bagres marinhos (Siluriformes, Ariidae) na Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro
TLDR
Marine catfish showed higher abundance in the inner Bay, with indication of spatial segregation, and total association index indicates a overall positive association among ali species, with higher Jaccard and Sorensen similarities coefficient for the pairs C. spixii/G.
Variação espacial e temporal de bagres marinhos (Siluriformes, Ariidae) na Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro
TLDR
Strategies of spatial separation may be explaining the coexistence of marine catfish in high abundance in the Sepetiba Bay, which is used as fish rearing area mainly due to the low depths and transparencies, favorable conditions to their early life cycle development.
Population Dynamics and Diet of the Madamango Sea Catfish Cathorops spixii (Agassiz, 1829) (Siluriformes: Ariidae) in a Tropical Bight in Southeastern Brazil
TLDR
Assessing certain population parameters and the dietary composition of the madamango sea catfish in shallow, non-estuarine coastal areas of Caraguatatuba Bight in southeastern Brazil indicates that the area may play a specific role in their development.
Relações ecológicas entre Stegastes fuscus e outros peixes associados ao coral-de-fogo Millepora alcicornis utilizando diferentes métodos
TLDR
Evidence is provided that through competition, S.fuscus presence may affect reef fish associated with M. alcicornis and the influence of coral colony size and presence of a high-competitive and extremely aggressive damselfish (Brazilian endemic Stegastes fuscus) on the reef fish community associated with branching fire-corals M.AlcicORNis is provided.
The marine catfish Genidens barbus (Ariidae) fisheries in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil: diagnosis and management suggestions.
TLDR
As alternatives to maintaining marine catfish exploitation in southeastern Brazil under control, the following management actions can be suggested: prohibition of fishing activity by the industrial sector; strengthening of inspection of the fleet that is not allowed to participate in the marine cat fish fisheries, with emphasis on purse seiners; and maintenance of a closed season for G. barbus.
Nycthemeral and Monthly Occupation of the Fish Assemblage on a Sheltered Beach of Baía Norte, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil
Interpreting fish community records is challenging for several reasons, including the lack of past ichthyofauna data, the cyclical temporal variations in the community, and the methodology employed,
Reproductive biology of two marine catfishes (Siluriformes, Ariidae) in the Sepetiba Bay, Brazil.
TLDR
Low fecundity and separation in spawning period suggest that both species are k-strategist, able to avoid interspecific competition in early stages of life cycle to optimize the use of the available niche.
Structure of the parasite infracommunity of Sciades proops from the Japaratuba River Estuary, Sergipe, Brazil.
TLDR
The sex of the host did not influence parasitic infections, but infection with Ergasilus sp.
Structure of the parasite infracommunity of Sciades proops from the Japaratuba River Estuary , Sergipe , Brazil
TLDR
The sex of the host did not influence parasitic infections, but infection with Ergasilus sp.
Influences of the reproductive cycle on condition of marine catfishes (Siluriformes, Ariidae) in a coastal area at southeastern Brazil
TLDR
Overall condition was associated with reproductive process, and was high before the reproductive season, decreasing during the spawning period in the estuary, then increasing when fish move to the bay (April–August), which are the probable mechanisms to optimize the use of the area by the three species.

Factors affecting the distribution of juvenile estuarine and inshore fish
TLDR
It is apparent however, that juveniles of many species are probably not attracted to estuaries per se but to shallow turbid areas, and the influence of high turbidity on fish may be linked to reduced predation pressure and perhaps food supply in shallow water.
Observations on Breeding of the Marine Catfish, Galeichthys felis (Linnaeus)
TLDR
Some new observations on G. felis in Texas waters will be set forth after Gunter (1945) gave some observations on the breeding of both species inTexas waters.
The seasonality of availability and movements of fishes in the channel of the York River, Virginia
TLDR
The combined effect of different distribution patterns was that total numbers of individuals and species increased in spring, declined in summer, and reached their greatest magnitude in fall.
