We study the stellar population far into the halo of one of the two brightest galaxies in the Coma cluster, NGC 4889, based on deep medium-resolution spectroscopy with FOCAS at the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. We fit single stellar population models to the measured line-strength (Lick) indices (Hβ, Mgb, [MgFe]′ and 〈Fe〉). Combining with literature data, we construct radial profiles of metallicity, [α/Fe] element abundance ratio and age for NGC 4889, from the centre out to ∼60 kpc (∼ 4 Re). We find… Expand

Kinematics and line strength indices in the halos of the Coma brightest cluster galaxies NGC 4874 and NGC 4889
Aims. We investigate the stellar kinematics and line strength indices in the outer halos of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the Coma cluster to obtain the outer halo V rot and σ profiles and toExpand
Sloshing in its cD halo: MUSE kinematics of the central galaxy NGC 3311 in the Hydra I cluster
Context. Early-type galaxies (ETGs) show a strong size evolution with redshift. This evolution is explained by fast “in-situ” star formation at high- z followed by a late mass assembly mostly drivenExpand
The stellar accretion origin of stellar population gradients in massive galaxies at large radii
We investigate the evolution of stellar population gradients from z = 2 to z = 0 in massive galaxies at large radii (r > 2Reff) using ten cosmological zoom simulations of halos with 6 × 10 12 M⊙ <Expand
The MASSIVE Survey II: Stellar Population Trends Out to Large Radius in Massive Early Type Galaxies
We examine stellar population gradients in ~100 massive early type galaxies spanning 180 < sigma* < 370 km/s and M_K of -22.5 to -26.5 mag, observed as part of the MASSIVE survey (Ma et al. 2014).Expand
The Hydra I cluster core - I. Stellar populations in the cD galaxy NGC 3311
Context. The history of the mass assembly of brightest cluster galaxies may be studied by mapping the stellar populations at large radial distances from the galaxy centre, where the dynamical timesExpand
Metallicity gradients in the globular cluster systems of early-type galaxies: in situ and accreted components?
Massive early-type galaxies typically have two subpopulations of globular clusters (GCs) which often reveal radial colour (metallicity) gradients. Collating gradients from the literature, we showExpand
The outer regions of the giant Virgo galaxy M 87 Kinematic separation of stellar halo and intracluster light
We present a spectroscopic study of 287 Planetary Nebulas (PNs) in a total area of ~0.4 deg^2 around the BCG M87 in Virgo A. With these data we can distinguish the stellar halo from the co-spatialExpand
A Novel Approach to Constrain the Mass Ratio of Minor Mergers in Elliptical Galaxies: Application to NGC 4889, the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Coma
Minor mergers are thought to be important for the buildup and structural evolution of massive elliptical galaxies. In this work, we report the discovery of a system of four shell features in NGCExpand
Hobby–Eberly Telescope (HET) spectroscopy is used to measure the velocity dispersion profile of the nearest prototypical cD galaxy, NGC 6166 in the cluster Abell 2199. We also present compositeExpand
A detection of the environmental dependence of the sizes and stellar haloes of massive central galaxies
We use ~100 square deg of deep (>28.5 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in i-band), high-quality (median 0.6 arcsec seeing) imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey to reveal the halo mass dependence ofExpand

We present stellar population parameters of 12 elliptical and S0 galaxies in the Coma cluster around and including the cD galaxy NGC 4874, based on spectra obtained using the Low Resolution ImagingExpand
Spatially resolved kinematics and stellar populations of brightest cluster and group galaxies

We explore the formation of α-enhanced and metal-rich stellar populations in the nuclei of luminous ellipticals under the assumption of two extreme galaxy formation scenarios based on hierarchicalExpand
Stellar populations in early-type Coma cluster galaxies
A detailed modelling and statistical analysis is conducted of the stellar populations (which act as fossil records of galaxy formation and evolution) and the spectro-photometric relations of a sampleExpand
Stellar populations in the centres of brightest cluster galaxies
This paper is part of a series devoted to the study of the stellar populations in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), aimed at setting constraints on the formation and evolution of these objects. WeExpand

Spatially resolved spectroscopy of Coma cluster early-type galaxies III. The stellar population gradients ?
Based on Paper I of this series (Mehlert et al. 2000), we derive central values and logarithmic gradients for the H, Mg and Fe indices of 35 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster. We find that pureExpand
