We study a sample of 257 Galactic disk M dwarfs (8 12 (M<0.25 \ms), decreasing by a factor \gsim 3 by M_V~14 (M~0.14\ms). This decrease in the LF is in good agreement with the ground-based photometric study of nearby stars by Stobie et al. (1989), and in mild conflict with the most recent LF measurements based on local parallax stars by Reid et al. (1995). The local LF of the faint Galactic disk stars can be transformed into a local mass function using an empirical mass-M_V relation. The mass… Expand
M Dwarfs from Hubble Space Telescope Star Counts. IV.
We study a sample of about 1400 disk M dwarfs that are found in 148 fields observed with the Wide Field Camera 2 (WFC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope and 162 fields observed with pre-repair PlanetaryExpand
The Luminosity and Mass Functions of Low-mass Stars in the Galactic Disk. II. The Field
We report on new measurements of the luminosity function (LF) and mass function (MF) of field low-mass dwarfs derived from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 photometry. The analysisExpand
M Dwarfs from Hubble Space Telescope Star Counts. III. The Groth Strip
We analyze the disk M dwarfs found in 31 new fields observed with the Wide Field Camera 2 (WFC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope, together with the sample previously analyzed from 22 WFC2 fields andExpand
Spheroid Luminosity and Mass Functions from Hubble Space Telescope Star Counts
We analyze 166 spheroid subdwarfs found in 53 -elds observed with the Wide Field (6.5 \ M V \ 14.5) Planetary Camera on the Hubble Space T elescope. The -elds cover 221 arcmin2 over a wide range ofExpand
Constraints on thick disc and halo parameters from HST photometry of field stars in the Galaxy
We analyse a sample of over 1000 stars from 32 fields imaged in the V and I bands with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera , on board of the Hubble Space Telescope. The fields are located at GalacticExpand
The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey. The assembly history of the stellar mass in galaxies: from the young to t
We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function of galaxies up to z=2.5 as obtained from the VVDS. We estimate the stellar mass from broad-band photometry using 2 differentExpand
Lyman Break Galaxies: Their Progenitors and Descendants
We study the evolution of Lyman break Galaxies (LBGs) from z = 5 to z = 0 by tracing the merger trees of galaxies in a large-scale hydrodynamic simulation based on a Λ cold dark matter model. InExpand
The field of NGC 6397 as a test for Galactic models
Taking advantage of recent HST data for field stars in the region of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397, we tested the predictions of several Galactic models with star counts reaching a largelyExpand
The Galactic Inner Halo: Searching for White Dwarfs and Measuring the Fundamental Galactic Constant, Θ0/R0*
We establish an extragalactic, zero-motion frame of reference within the deepest optical image of a globular star cluster, a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 123 orbit exposure of M4 (GO 8679, Cycle 9).Expand
The empirical mass-luminosity relation for low mass stars
Abstract This work is devoted to improving empirical mass-luminosity relations (MLR) and mass-metallicity-luminosity relation (MMLR) for low mass stars. For these stars, observational data in theExpand
