Interactions between dark matter and dark energy, allowing both conformal and and disformal couplings, are studied in detail. We discuss the background evolution, anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background and large scale structures. One of our main findings is that a large conformal coupling is not necessarily disallowed in the presence of a general disformal term. On the other hand, we find that negative disformal couplings very often lead to instabilities in the scalar field. Studying…

Disformally coupled inflation

A disformal coupling between two scalar fields is considered in the context of cosmological inflation. The coupling introduces novel derivative interactions mixing the kinetic terms of the fields but

Generalized dark energy interactions with multiple fluids

In the search for an explanation for the current acceleration of the Universe, scalar fields are the most simple and useful tools to build models of dark energy. This field, however, must in

Effective theory of interacting dark energy

We present a unifying treatment of dark energy and modified gravity that allows distinct conformal-disformal couplings of matter species to the gravitational sector. In this very general approach, we

Can conformal and disformal couplings between dark sectors explain the EDGES 21-cm anomaly?

The recently announced result by EDGES points an unexpected excess in the 21 cm global brightness temperature from cosmic dawn at $z\sim 17$, potentially indicating new phenomena beyond the

Probing the imprints of generalized interacting dark energy on the growth of perturbations

We extensively study the evolution and distinct signatures of cosmological models, in which dark energy interacts directly with dark matter. We first focus on the imprints of these coupled models on

The variation of the fine-structure constant from disformal couplings

We study a theory in which the electromagnetic field is disformally coupled to a scalar field, in addition to a usual non-minimal electromagnetic coupling. We show that disformal couplings modify the

Anisotropic scalar field dark energy with a disformally coupled Yang–Mills field

In the context of scalar–tensor theories, the inclusion of new degrees of freedom coupled nonminimally to the gravitational sector might produce some appealing effects on the cosmic expansion

Dark D-brane cosmology: From background evolution to cosmological perturbations

We study the cosmological predictions of the dark D-brane model, in which dark matter resides on a D-brane moving in a higher-dimensional space. By construction, dark matter interacts only

Potential-driven inflation with disformal coupling to gravity

In this paper, we investigate the potential-driven inflation models with a disformal coupling to Einstein Gravity, to find out the effects of such a coupling on these models. We consider a simple

Disformally coupled quintessence

In this work we consider a cosmological model in which dark energy is portrayed by a canonical scalar field which is allowed to couple to the other species by means of a disformal transformation of

Screening modifications of gravity through disformally coupled fields.

It is shown that extensions to general relativity, which introduce a strongly coupled scalar field, can be viable if the interaction has a nonconformal form and if the field is locally static and smooth, the coupling becomes invisible in the Solar System: this is the disformal screening mechanism.

Disformal scalar fields and the dark sector of the universe

Disformal transformations have proven to be very useful to devise models of the dark sector. In the present paper we apply such transformation to a single scalar field theory as a way to drive the

Dynamics of dark energy with a coupling to dark matter

Dark energy and dark matter are the dominant sources in the evolution of the late universe. They are currently only indirectly detected via their gravitational effects, and there could be a coupling

Constraining disformally coupled scalar fields

Light scalar fields can naturally couple disformally to matter fields. Static, nonrelativistic sources do not generate a classical field profile for a disformally coupled scalar, and so such scalars

Constraints on nonconformal couplings from the properties of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

A disformal coupling of the field to the cosmic microwave background is shown to affect the evolution of the energy density in the radiation fluid and produces a modification of the distribution function of the CMB, which vanishes if photons and baryons couple in the same way to the scalar.

Modified gravity and the radiation dominated epoch

In this paper we consider scalar-tensor theories, allowing for both conformal and disformal couplings to a fluid with a general equation of state. We derive the effective coupling for both background

DBI Galileons in the Einstein Frame: Local Gravity and Cosmology

It is shown that a disformally coupled theory in which the gravitational sector has the Einstein-Hilbert form is equivalent to a quartic Dirac-Born-Infeld Galileon Lagrangian, possessing nonlinear

Models of dark matter coupled to dark energy

We present three distinct types of models of dark energy in the form of a scalar field which is explicitly coupled to dark matter. Our construction draws from the pull-back formalism for fluids and

Towards viable cosmological models of disformal theories of gravity

The late-time cosmological dynamics of disformal gravity are investigated using dynamical systems methods. It is shown that in the general case there are no stable attractors that screen fifth-forces

Time-dependent couplings in the dark sector: from background evolution to non-linear structure formation

We present a complete numerical study of cosmological models with a time dependent coupling between the dark energy component driving the present accelerated expansion of the Universe and the Cold
