We present a self-consistent study of the stellar populations and the ionized gas in a sample of 10 HII galaxies with, at least, four measured electron temperatures and a precise determination of ionic abundances following the "direct method". We fitted the spectral energy distribution of the galaxies using the program STARLIGHT and Starburst99 libraries in order to quantify the contribution of the underlying stellar population to the equivalent width of H (EW(H)), which amounts to about 10…

Coevolution of metallicity and star formation in galaxies to z=3.7: I. A fundamental plane

With the aim of understanding the coevolution of star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (M*), and oxygen abundance (O/H) in galaxies up to redshift z ≃ 3.7, we have compiled the largest available

A bayesian-like approach to derive chemical abundances in type-2 active galactic nuclei based on photoionization models

We present a new methodology for the analysis of the emission lines of the interstellar medium in the narrow-line regions around type-2 active galactic nuclei. Our aim is to provide a recipe that

SEARCH FOR EXTREMELY METAL-POOR GALAXIES IN THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY. II. HIGH ELECTRON TEMPERATURE OBJECTS

Extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are defined to have a gas-phase metallicity smaller than a tenth of the solar value ( 12 + log [ O/H ] < 7.69 ?> ). They are uncommon, chemically and possibly

On the use of the index N2 to derive the metallicity in metal-poor galaxie

The N2 index ([N ii] λ6584/Hα) is used to determine emission line galaxy metallicities at all redshifts, including high redshift, where galaxies tend to be metal-poor. The initial aim of this work

Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopy of the ionized gas in IZw18

We present a detailed 2D study of the ionized ISM of IZw18 using new PMAS-IFU optical observations. IZw18 is a high-ionization galaxy which is among the most metal-poor starbursts in the local
