The discrimination between nuclear explosions and earthquakes is an important issue for the verification of compliance with a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Several diagnostic techniques are examined for identifying earthquakes as events distinct from possible underground nuclear explosions. It has been suggested that, the differences between explosions and earthquakes are due to differences in source dimension, source time function, source mechanism and focal depth, or to combination of these…

Real-time detection and characterization of nuclear explosion using broadband analyses of regional seismic stations
This preliminary study aims to propose a new method of real-time detection and characterization of nuclear explosions by analyzing broadband seismic waveforms acquired from a network of regional
Discrimination of explosions and earthquakes: An example based on spectra and source parameters of the 11th May 1998 Pokhran explosion and the 9th April 2009 earthquake
We compare the P-, S- and Lg- spectra of the 11th May, 1998 Pokhran underground nuclear explosion (NE) with those of an earthquake (EQ) of comparable magnitude that occurred in its vicinity (~100 km
Discrimination of Quarry Blasts and Microearthquakes Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems in the Tehran Region
The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the use of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for discrimination between quarry blasts and microearthquakes in the Tehran region using data
Hypothetical Physics and Chemistry of Volcanic Eruptions: The Doorway to Their Prediction
This article presents a further development of the hypotheses concerning the possibility of predicting (“tectonic”) earthquakes [1]. Those hypotheses are based on the conversion of all types of
Classification of Laser Interferometer Seismic Signal Data based on K means Clustering
— The mainly used devices to detect earthquakes are velocimeters and accelerometers. However, it is necessary to detect seismic waves accurately in micro-seismic wave measurement. A heterodyne laser
Study of the Possibility of Predicting Earthquakes
It is already well known that the “when, where and how strong” earthquake prediction problem cannot be solved by only analyzing the database from former earthquakes. A possible solution to this
Support Vector Machine Model for Automatic Classification of Seismic Events in the region of Funil Reservoir, Minas Gerais, State, Brazil
The present study introduces the first steps of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm using two discrimination features: spectral ratio and waveform complexity on a dataset characterized by lower
