Abstract We find the discrete states of the c = 1 string in the light-cone gauge of Polyakov. When the state space of the gravitational sector of the theory is taken to be the irreducible representations of the SL (2, R ) current algebra, the cohomology of the theory is not the same as that in the conformal gauge. In particular, states with ghost numbers up to four appear. However, after taking the space of the theory to be the Fock space of the Wakimoto free-field representation of the SL (2… Expand

On the twisted N=2 superconformal structure in 2D gravity coupled to matter
Abstract It is shown that the 2D gravity, described either in the conformal gauge (the Liouville theory) or in the light cone gauge, when coupled to matter possesses an infinite number of twisted NExpand
Physical states in G/G models and two-dimensional gravity
Abstract An analysis of the BRST cohomology of the G/G topological models is performed for the case of A 1 (1) . Invoking a special free field parametrization of the various currents, the cohomologyExpand
Topological cigar and the c = 1 string: open and closed
We clarify some aspects of the map between the c = 1 string theory at self-dual radius and the topologically twisted cigar at level one. We map the ZZ and FZZT D-branes in the c = 1 string theory atExpand
The spectrum of the 2D Black Hole, or Does the 2D black hole have tachyonic or W--hair?
We solve the equations of motion of the tachyon and the discrete states in the background of Witten's semiclassical black hole and in the exact 2D dilaton-graviton background of Dijkgraaf et al. WeExpand
On 2D gravity coupled to c ≤ 1 matter in the Polyakov light-cone gauge
Abstract A new formulation of c ≤ 1 matter coupled to 2D gravity is proposed. This model, being closely analogous to one in the Polyakov light-cone gauge, possesses well defined global propertiesExpand
High Mobility Diamonds and Particle Detectors

We present a nonrelativistic fermionic field theory in two dimensions coupled to external gauge fields. The singlet sector of the c=1 matrix model corresponds to a specific external gauge field. TheExpand
From Loops to Fields in 2d Quantum Gravity

Ground ring of two-dimensional string theory
Abstract String theories with two-dimensional space-time target spaces are characterized by the existence of a “ground ring” of operators of spin (0, 0). By understanding this ring, one canExpand
S = 1 for c = 1
Abstract We compare the tachyon correlation functions in the Liouville path integral and in the string field theory approaches to quantum gravity coupled to c = 1 matter. Both calculations yieldExpand
BRST quantization of Polyakov's two-dimensional gravity
Abstract Two-dimensional gravity coupled to minimal models is quantized in the chiral gauge by the BRST method. By using the Wakimoto construction for the gravity sector, we show how the quartetExpand
BRST analysis of physical states for 2D gravity coupled toc≦1 matter

Conformal Field Theory and 2D Quantum Gravity
Inspired by the recent work of Knizhnik, Polyakov and Zamolodchikov on the 2D quantum gravity in the “light cone” gauge, we present a proposal for solving the theory in the usual conformal gauge. OurExpand
