These notes summarize four expository lectures delivered at the Advanced School of the ICTS Program Groups, Geometry and Dynamics, December, 2012, Almora, India. The target audience was a group of students at or near the end of a traditional undergraduate math major. My purpose was to expose the types of discrete groups that arise in connection with Riemann surfaces. I have not hesitated to shorten or omit proofs, especially in the later sections, where I thought completeness would interrupt…

Counting topological types of finite group actions
We study fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$ group of rank $k\geq 1$, on surfaces of genus $g$, obtaining explicit counts of topological equivalence classes via a combinatorial

Describing the geometric theory of discrete groups and the associated tesselations of the underlying space, this work also develops the theory of Mobius transformations in n-dimensional Euclidean
On extendability of group actions on compact Riemann surfaces
The question of whether a given group G which acts faithfully on a compact Riemann surface X of genus g > 2 is the full group of automorphisms of X (or some other such surface of the same genus) is
On branch loci in Teichmüller space
The branch locus of the ramified covering of the space of moduli of Fuchsian groups with fixed presentation by the corresponding Teichmiller space is decomposed into a union of Teichmiuller spaces,
