For the last two decades we have been observing a huge increase in discoveries of long-period comets (LPCs), especially those with large-perihelion distances. We collected data for a full sample of LPCs discovered over the 1801-2017 period including their osculating orbits, discovery moments (to study the discovery distances), and original semimajor axes (to study the number ratio of large-perihelion to small-perihelion LPCs in function of 1/a-original, and to construct the precise distribution…
First stars that could significantly perturb comet motion are finally found.
Since 1950 when Oort published his paper on the structure of the cloud of comets it is believed that stars passing near this hypothetical cometary reservoir play an important role in the dynamical
BVR photometry of comets 63P/Wild 1 and C/2012 K1 (PANSTARRS)
We analyzed the BVR photometry of the comets 63P/Wild 1 and C/2012 K1 (PANSTARRS) obtained between March 2013 and May 2014, with 0.20-m to 2.0-m aperture telescopes installed in Australia, Europa and
Hyperbolic Orbits in the Solar System: Interstellar Origin or Perturbed Oort Cloud Comets?
We study the dynamical properties of objects in hyperbolic orbits passing through the inner Solar system in the context of two different potential sources: interstellar space and the Oort cloud. We
Potential Backup Targets for Comet Interceptor
TLDR
A preliminary set of backup targets from the known Jupiter family comets, where a suitable fly-by trajectory can be achieved during the nominal mission timeline (including the possibility of some launch delay).

Distribution of long-period comets: comparison between simulations and observations
Aims. This paper is devoted to a comparison between observations and simulations of the so-called Oort spike formed by the “new” observable long-period comets. Methods. The synthetic distributions of
Dynamical evolution of C/2017 K2 PANSTARRS
Context. The comet C/2017 K2 PANSTARRS drew attention to its activity at the time of its discovery in May 2017 when it was about 16 au from the Sun. This Oort spike comet will approach its perihelion
Oort spike comets with large perihelion distances
The complete sample of large-perihelion nearly-parabolic comets discovered during the period 1901-2010 is studied starting from their orbit determination. Next, an orbital evolution that includes
The Demographics of Long-Period Comets
The absolute magnitude and perihelion distributions of long-period comets are derived, using data from the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) survey. The results are surprising in three
The Evolution of Long-Period Comets
We study the evolution of long-period comets by numerical integration of their orbits, a more realistic dynamical approach than the Monte Carlo and analytic methods previously used to study this
Near-parabolic comets observed in 2006–2010. The individualized approach to 1/a-determination and the new distribution of original and future orbits
Dynamics of a complete sample of 22 small perihelion distance near-parabolic comets discovered in the years 2006 - 2010 is studied. First, osculating orbits are obtained after a careful positional
Dynamical history of the observed long-period comets
We present results of some numerical studies on the dynamical history of a large number of observed long-period comets. In our investigations we include all comets with good quality orbits. We
Where do long‐period comets come from? 26 comets from the non‐gravitational Oort spike
Since 1950, when Oort published his hypothesis, several important new facts have been established in this field. At present, there are still questions surrounding the apparent source region (or
Debiasing the NEOWISE Cryogenic Mission Comet Populations
We use NEOWISE data from the four-band and three-band cryogenic phases of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission to constrain size distributions of the comet populations and debias
New catalogue of one-apparition comets discovered in the years 1901–1950 - I. Comets from the Oort spike
Context. The orbits of one-apparition comets discovered in the early part of the last century have formerly been determined with very different numerical methods and assumptions on the model of the
