Discovery statistics and 1/a distribution of long-period comets detected during 1801–2017
@article{Krolikowska2019DiscoverySA, title={Discovery statistics and 1/a distribution of long-period comets detected during 1801–2017}, author={Malgorzata Kr'olikowska and Piotr A. Dybczyński}, journal={Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society}, year={2019} }
For the last two decades we have been observing a huge increase in discoveries of long-period comets (LPCs), especially those with large-perihelion distances. We collected data for a full sample of LPCs discovered over the 1801-2017 period including their osculating orbits, discovery moments (to study the discovery distances), and original semimajor axes (to study the number ratio of large-perihelion to small-perihelion LPCs in function of 1/a-original, and to construct the precise distribution…

Since 1950 when Oort published his paper on the structure of the cloud of comets it is believed that stars passing near this hypothetical cometary reservoir play an important role in the dynamical…
BVR photometry of comets 63P/Wild 1 and C/2012 K1 (PANSTARRS)
- Physics, GeologyAstrophysics and Space Science
- 2020
We analyzed the BVR photometry of the comets 63P/Wild 1 and C/2012 K1 (PANSTARRS) obtained between March 2013 and May 2014, with 0.20-m to 2.0-m aperture telescopes installed in Australia, Europa and…
Hyperbolic Orbits in the Solar System: Interstellar Origin or Perturbed Oort Cloud Comets?
- Physics, GeologyMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We study the dynamical properties of objects in hyperbolic orbits passing through the inner Solar system in the context of two different potential sources: interstellar space and the Oort cloud. We…

Distribution of long-period comets: comparison between simulations and observations
- Physics, Geology
- 2017
Aims. This paper is devoted to a comparison between observations and simulations of the so-called Oort spike formed by the “new” observable long-period comets. Methods. The synthetic distributions of…
Dynamical evolution of C/2017 K2 PANSTARRS
- Physics, GeologyAstronomy & Astrophysics
- 2018
Context. The comet C/2017 K2 PANSTARRS drew attention to its activity at the time of its discovery in May 2017 when it was about 16 au from the Sun. This Oort spike comet will approach its perihelion…

We study the evolution of long-period comets by numerical integration of their orbits, a more realistic dynamical approach than the Monte Carlo and analytic methods previously used to study this…
Near-parabolic comets observed in 2006–2010. The individualized approach to 1/a-determination and the new distribution of original and future orbits

Dynamics of a complete sample of 22 small perihelion distance near-parabolic comets discovered in the years 2006 - 2010 is studied.
