In the course of our efforts to characterize the EBV-carrying cells that are responsible for direct growth or the 2-step mechanism, based on virus release from the explanted cells and subsequent transformation of previously uninfected cells, we have encountered an unusual CLL patient who carried a small subpopulation of in vivo EBV-infected leukemia cells.
