The results reported form part of a series of experiments to substantiate and extend the findings by Belli et al. (1989) that protons are more biologically effective at cell killing than alpha-particles of the same LET. The irradiations were carried out using the Variable Energy Cyclotron (VEC) at the Harwell Laboratories.
