We present the first ever direct N-body computations of an old Milky Way globular cluster over its entire lifetime on a star-by-star basis. Using recent GPU hardware at Bonn University, we have performed a comprehensive set of N-body calculations to model the distant outer halo globular cluster Palomar 14 (Pal 14). Pal 14 is unusual in that its mean density is about 10 times smaller than that in the solar neighbourhood. Its large radius as well as its low-mass make it possible to simulate Pal…

Mass segregation in the outer halo globular cluster Palomar 14

We present evidence for mass segregation in the outer-halo globular cluster Palomar 14, which is intuitively unexpected since its present-day two-body relaxation time significantly exceeds the Hubble

Testing lowered isothermal models with direct N-body simulations of globular clusters

Several self-consistent models have been proposed, aiming at describing the phase-space distribution of stars in globular clusters. This study explores the ability of the recently proposed limepy

N-body models of globular clusters: metallicities, half-light radii and mass-to-light ratios

Size differences of ≈20 per cent between red (metal-rich) and blue (metal-poor) subpopulations of globular clusters have been observed, generating an ongoing debate as to whether these originate from

GLOBULAR CLUSTER STREAMS AS GALACTIC HIGH-PRECISION SCALES—THE POSTER CHILD PALOMAR 5

Using the example of the tidal stream of the Milky Way globular cluster Palomar 5 (Pal 5), we demonstrate how observational data on tidal streams can be efficiently reduced in dimensionality and

Dynamical Evolution of Outer-Halo Globular Clusters

Abstract Outer-halo globular clusters show large half-light radii and flat stellar mass functions, depleted in low-mass stars. Using N-body simulations of globular clusters on eccentric orbits within

The Lifetimes of Star Clusters Born with a Top-heavy IMF

Several observational and theoretical indications suggest that the initial mass function (IMF) becomes increasingly top-heavy (i.e., overabundant in high-mass stars with mass ) with decreasing

A MONTE CARLO ANALYSIS OF THE VELOCITY DISPERSION OF THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER PALOMAR 14

We present the results of a detailed analysis of the projected velocity dispersion of the globular cluster Palomar 14 performed using recent high-resolution spectroscopic data and extensive Monte

Abundance analysis of the outer halo globular cluster Palomar 14

We determine the elemental abundances of nine red giant stars belonging to Palomar 14 (Pal 14). Pal 14 is an outer halo globular cluster (GC) at a distance of ∼70 kpc. Our abundance analysis is based

Towards an N-body model for the globular cluster M4

This paper describes an N-body model for the dynamical evolution of the nearby globular cluster M4. The initial conditions, with N = 484710 particles, were generated from a published study of this

The state of globular clusters at birth: emergence from the gas-embedded phase

In this paper, we discuss the origin of the observed correlation between cluster concentration c and present-day mass function (PDMF) slope α reported by De Marchi, Paresce & Pulone. This relation

Initial conditions for globular clusters and assembly of the old globular cluster population of the Milky Way

By comparing the outcome of N-body calculations that include primordial residual-gas expulsion with the observed properties of 20 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) for which the stellar mass function

IS THE DISTANT GLOBULAR CLUSTER Pal 14 IN A DEEP FREEZE?

We investigate the velocity dispersion of Pal 14, an outer Milky Way globular cluster at a Galactocentric distance of 71 kpc with a very low stellar density (central density 0.1–0.2 M☉ pc−3). Due to

GLOBULAR CLUSTERS IN THE OUTER GALACTIC HALO: AM-1 AND PALOMAR 14

AM-1, at ∼120 kpc, and Palomar 14 (Pal 14), at ∼70 kpc, are two of the most distant Galactic globular clusters (GCs) known. We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 photometry

TESTING FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS WITH DISTANT STAR CLUSTERS: ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONAL DATA ON PALOMAR 14,,

We use the distant outer halo globular cluster Palomar 14 as a test case for classical versus modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). Previous theoretical calculations have shown that the line-of-sight

Monte Carlo simulations of star clusters – VII. The globular cluster 47 Tuc

We describe Monte Carlo models for the dynamical evolution of the massive globular cluster 47 Tuc (NGC 104). The code includes treatments of two-body relaxation, most kinds of threeand four-body

Milky Way mass models for orbit calculations

Studying the trajectories of objects like stars, globular clusters or satellite galaxies in the Milky Way allows to trace the dark matter halo but requires reliable models of its gravitational

THE ACS SURVEY OF GALACTIC GLOBULAR CLUSTERS. VIII. EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENT ON GLOBULAR CLUSTER GLOBAL MASS FUNCTIONS

We have used observations obtained as part of the Hubble Space Telescope/ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters to construct global present-day mass functions for 17 globular clusters utilizing

A Preliminary Study of the Orion Nebula Cluster Structure and Dynamics

We use optical and near-infrared star counts to explore the structure and dynamics of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This very young (<1 Myr) cluster is not circularly symmetric in projection but is

The present and future mass of the Milky Way halo

A simple model for the Milky Way halo is presented. It has a flat rotation curve in the inner regions, but the density falls off sharply beyond an outer edge. This truncated, flat rotation curve (TF)

The initial conditions of young globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud

N-body simulations are used to model the early evolution of globular clusters. These simulations include residual gas which was not turned into stars, which is expelled from the globular cluster by
