We compare new maps of the hot gas, dark matter, and galaxies for 1E 0657-56, a cluster with a rare, high-velocity merger occurring nearly in the plane of the sky. The X-ray observations reveal a prominent bow shock and a bullet-like gas subcluster just exiting the collision site. The optical image shows that the gas bullet lags behind the subcluster galaxies; the weak-lensing mass map reveals a dark matter clump lying ahead of the collisional gas bullet, but coincident with the effectively… Expand
Constraints on the Self-Interaction Cross Section of Dark Matter from Numerical Simulations of the Merging Galaxy Cluster 1E 0657?56
We compare recent results from X-ray, strong lensing, weak lensing, and optical observations with numerical simulations of the merging galaxy cluster 1E 0657–56. X-ray observations reveal aExpand
What does the Bullet Cluster tell us about Self-Interacting Dark Matter?
We perform numerical simulations of the merging galaxy cluster 1E 0657−56 (the Bullet Cluster), including the effects of elastic dark matter scattering. In a similar manner to the stripping of gas byExpand
ON DARK PEAKS AND MISSING MASS: A WEAK-LENSING MASS RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MERGING CLUSTER SYSTEM A520*, **
Merging clusters of galaxies are unique in their power to directly probe and place limits on the self-interaction cross-section of dark matter. Detailed observations of several merging clusters haveExpand
Light/mass offsets in the lensing cluster Abell 3827: evidence for collisional dark matter?
If dark matter has a non-zero self-interaction cross-section, then dark matter haloes of individual galaxies in cluster cores should experience a drag force from the ambient dark matter of theExpand
On the Shape of Dark Matter Halos in the Galaxy Cluster Abell 3827 and the Scattering Cross-Section of Dark Matter
Four bright elliptical galaxies lie within the central 20 kpc of the galaxy cluster Abell 3827, indicative of an ongoing merger. Gravitational lensing has already been used to measure the offsetsExpand
On the cross-section of dark matter using substructure infall into galaxy clusters
We develop a statistical method to measure the interaction cross-section of dark matter, exploiting the continuous minor merger events in which small substructures fall into galaxy clusters. We findExpand
Weak-lensing mass reconstruction of the interacting cluster 1E 0657-558: Direct evidence for the existence of dark matter
We present a weak-lensing mass reconstruction of the interacting cluster 1E 0657-558, in which we detect both the main cluster and a subcluster. The subcluster is identified as a smaller cluster thatExpand
Revealing the Properties of Dark Matter in the Merging Cluster MACS J0025.4–1222
We constrain the physical nature of dark matter using the newly identified massive merging galaxy cluster MACS J0025.4−1222. As was previously shown by the example of the Bullet Cluster (1E065756),Expand
Looking for dark matter trails in colliding galaxy clusters
If dark matter interacts, even weakly, via non-gravitational forces, simulations predict that it will be preferentially scattered towards the trailing edge of the halo during collisions betweenExpand
Discovery of a Ringlike Dark Matter Structure in the Core of the Galaxy Cluster Cl 0024+17
We present a comprehensive mass reconstruction of the rich galaxy cluster Cl 0024+17 at z 0.4 from ACS data, unifying both strong- and weak-lensing constraints. The weak-lensing signal from a denseExpand
