I argue that consistent geometrical descriptions of the universe are far from unique even as low-energy limits and that an abstract "atomic" description of spacetime and gauge-theoretic geometry in terms of K-theories of algebraic and analytic cycles has the promise to restore uniqueness to our description.

Spacetime singularities in string theory.
It is shown that a large class of time-dependent solutions to Einstein's equation are classical solutions to string theory. These include metrics with large curvature and some with spacetime
We give an elementary introduction to the first author’s theory of intersection spaces associated to complex projective varieties with only isolated singularities. We also survey recent results on
Resolution of Orbifold Singularities in String Theory
In this paper the relationship between the classical description of the resolution of quotient singularities and the string picture is reviewed in the context of N=(2,2) superconformal field
Motives: an introductory survey for physicists
We survey certain accessible aspects of Grothendieck's theory of motives in arithmetic algebraic geometry for mathematical physicists, focussing on areas that have recently found applications in
Quantum fields and motives
A space-time orbifold: A toy model for a cosmological singularity
We explore bosonic strings and Type II superstrings in the simplest time dependent backgrounds, namely orbifolds of Minkowski space by time reversal and some spatial reflections. We show that there
Resolution of Singularities
This article is an exposition of an elementary constructive proof of canonical resolution of singularities in characteristic zero, presented in detail in Invent. Math. 128 (1997), 207-302. We define
The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time
The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions.
Feynman Integrals and Motives of Configuration Spaces
We formulate the problem of renormalization of Feynman integrals and its relation to periods of motives in configuration space instead of momentum space. The algebro-geometric setting is provided by
Wave Function of the Universe
A proposal for the wave function of the "ground state" or state of minimum excitation: the ground-state amplitude for a three-geometry is given by a path integral over all compact positive-definite four-geometries which have the three- geometries as a boundary.
