The digestibilities of nutrients and energy in Wakame were measured in healthy adult males. A test diet was given for 5 days after 5 days on a basal diet which supplied 40 g/day of protein and 45 kcal/kg/day of energy. The test diet was identical with the basal diet except that Wakame was incorporated. Digestibility was calculated by the difference of fecal output between the test period and the basal period. However the digestibility of its nutrient component was found to be different at each… Expand
Poor fermentability of "mekabu" (sporophyll of Undaria pinnatifida) alginic acid in batch culture using pig cecal bacteria.
TLDR
It is suggested that alginic acid was poorly fermentable for hindgut bacteria and that its contribution to the host energy pool via microbial metabolism is small. Expand
Current knowledge and future perspectives of the use of seaweeds for livestock production and meat quality: a systematic review.
TLDR
Overall, the use of macroalgae as feedstuffs is a promising strategy for the development of a more sustainable livestock production and attenuating the current competition among food-feed-biofuel industries. Expand
Effects of a polysaccharide-rich extract derived from Irish-sourced Laminaria digitata on the composition and metabolic activity of the human gut microbiota using an in vitro colonic model
TLDR
The microbiota-associated metabolic and compositional changes noted provide initial indication of putative beneficial health benefits of L.digitata in vitro; however, research is needed to clarify if L. digitata-derived fiber can favorably alter the gut microbiota and confer health benefits in vivo. Expand
Risks and benefits of consuming edible seaweeds
TLDR
If the potential functional food and nutraceutical applications of seaweed are to be realized, more evidence from human intervention studies is needed to evaluate the nutritional benefits of seaweeds and the efficacy of their purported bioactive components. Expand
Emergent Sources of Prebiotics: Seaweeds and Microalgae
TLDR
An overview of the importance of the dietary fibers, as well as the benefits of prebiotics, to human health is given and the mechanisms of the benefits, in general, and the types and benefits of algal fibers in human health are highlighted. Expand
Emergent Sources of Prebiotics: Seaweeds and Microalgae

The prebiotic potential of polysaccharides and extracts of seaweeds
TLDR
The prospects for inclusion of seaweed polysaccharides in the composition of functional nutrition products for the purposes of correcting intestinal bacterial disorders and inflammatory processes and normalizing the immune and metabolic status are discussed. Expand
A combined Phase I and II open-label study on the immunomodulatory effects of seaweed extract nutrient complex
TLDR
The seaweed nutrient complex containing a blend of extracts from three different species of brown algae plus nutrients was found to be safe to use when taken orally over 4 weeks and demonstrated to have potential as an immune modulator. Expand
Therapies from Fucoidan; Multifunctional Marine Polymers
TLDR
The role for fucoidan in the control of acute and chronic inflammation via selectin blockade, enzyme inhibition and inhibiting the complement cascade is discussed, as well as the recent data on toxicology and uptake of fucoidans. Expand
Perspective on the Use of Sulfated Polysaccharides from Marine Organisms as a Source of New Antithrombotic Drugs
TLDR
If these aspects are successfully addressed, sulfated polysaccharides from marine organisms may conquer the frontier of antithrombotic therapy and open new avenues for treatment or prevention of thromboembolic diseases. Expand
