The diffusion of a single molecule through a sharply focused laser beam has been observed. The diffusion was observed by recording photoelectron bursts of single molecules in transit through the laser beam with Gaussian intensity profile. Up to 20 photoelectrons were detected for Rhodamin 6G in a transit time of 40 .ts which corresponds to the diffusion time through a volume element of 2x10'61.
