The purpose of this study was for us to review diagnostic accuracy of diffusion‐weighted imaging (DWI) in primary head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), detection of metastatic lymph nodes, and recurrences.
Clinical utility of apparent diffusion coefficient and diffusion‐weighted magnetic resonance imaging for resectability assessment of head and neck tumors with skull base invasion
TLDR
The usefulness of apparent diffusion coefficient and diffusion‐weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the detection of malignant tumors has been reported but the role of ADC and DWI for diagnosis of skull base tumors is clarified.
Diffusion-weighted imaging in the head and neck region : usefulness of apparent diffusion coefficient values for characterization of lesions HEAD AND NECK IMAGING
METHODS Ninety consecutive patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at a university hospital for diagnosis of neck lesions were included in this prospective study. Diffusion-weighted
Lymph Node Disease and Advanced Head and Neck Imaging: A Review of the 2013 Literature
TLDR
CT, MRI, and PET are examined in this article, with a focus on H&N disease processes and the technical aspects of imaging.
Diffusion-Weighted Imaging of the Head and Neck (Including Temporal Bone).
Textural features on 18F-FDG PET/CT and dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging for predicting treatment response and survival of patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma
TLDR
This research presents a novel probabilistic procedure called “spot-spot analysis” that allows for real-time analysis of the response of the immune system to foreign substance abuse.
Chapter 2 Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck-Imaging Evaluation of Regional Lymph Nodes and Implications for Management.
TLDR
The role of imaging and its implications for management are reviewed, with emphasis on the traditional modalities and imaging criteria, including evaluation for extranodal extension.
Imaging evaluation of lymphadenopathy and patterns of lymph node spread in head and neck cancer
TLDR
The imaging-based classification, which has been adopted by the American Joint Committee on Cancer, will be presented, the morphologic characteristics used to identify metastatic nodes will be reviewed and the typical nodal spread patterns of the major mucosal cancers of the head and neck will be examined.
Utility of diffusion MRI characteristics of cervical lymph nodes as disease classifier between patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and healthy volunteers
TLDR
Results suggest that pretreatment microstructural diffusion MRI characteristics in lymph nodes, assessed by ADC and α value histogram analysis, can identify nodal disease.
Diagnosing oral squamous cell carcinoma: How much imaging do we really need? A review of the current literature.

Local recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck after radio(chemo)therapy: Diagnostic performance of FDG-PET/MRI with diffusion-weighted sequences
TLDR
FDG-PET/DWIMRI yields excellent results for detection and T-classification of HNSCC after radio(chemo)therapy and facilitates planning of salvage surgery in the irradiated neck.

Positron‐Emission Tomography for Surveillance of Head and Neck Cancer
TLDR
To determine the diagnostic accuracy and the ideal timing of 18fluoro‐fluorodeoxyglucose positron‐emission tomography in the posttreatment surveillance of head and neck mucosal squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
Use of integrated 18F‐FDG PET/CT to improve the accuracy of initial cervical nodal evaluation in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
We investigated the accuracy of performing cervical nodal evaluation with using integrated 18F‐fluoro deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/CT for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the head
[Diffusion-weighted MR imaging of the head and neck].
TLDR
This imaging technique now replaces CT and conventional MR imaging for the initial diagnosis of cholesteatoma and detection of recurrent disease and has become virtually indispensable for the MR imaging evaluation of the head and neck.
Advances in imaging in the work-up of head and neck cancer patients.
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: value of diffusion-weighted MR imaging for nodal staging.
TLDR
DW imaging performed with ADC(b0-1000) values had higher accuracy than turbo spin-echo MR imaging in nodal staging, providing added value in the detection of subcentimeter nodal metastases.
Imaging in head and neck cancer
TLDR
MRI is the preferred modality for assessment of nasopharyngeal, sinonasal, and parotid tumors, because of better contrast resolution, high frequency of perineural spread, and less prominent motion artifacts, and combined PET/CT may be the modality of choice.
Diffusion-weighted MRI for nodal staging of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: impact on radiotherapy planning.
Diagnostic accuracy and additional value of diffusion-weighted imaging for discrimination of malignant cervical lymph nodes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
TLDR
In this study, with predominantly small lymph nodes, the ADC criterion is the strongest independent predictor of presence of metastasis and the use of ADC values in combination with the other MRI criteria significantly improves the discrimination between malignant and benign lymph nodes.
