Intrahippocampal injection of the endogenous excitotoxin quinolinic acid (QUIN) induces seizures together with local, delayed neurodegeneration in specific cell layers. In situ hybridization histochemistry was used to study the spatio-temporal pattern of expression of neurotrophins (NTFs) after this treatment.
