Specific oligonucleotide probes and in situ hybridization histochemistry were used to study the ontogeny and regulation of the mRNAs for proenkephalin A and preprosomatostatin in rat brain. In adult brain the most intense hybridization signal for the proenkephalin A mRNA was in caudate putamen, nucleus accumbens and olfactory tubercle.
