Acute cellular allograft rejection is characterized by leukocyte invasion and tissue destruction, associated with qualitative and quantitative alterations in the extracellular matrix (ECM) compartment. Metabolism of ECM proteins is mainly regulated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), that are zinc depended endoproteinases.
