1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 has been used with success in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism associated with chronic renal failure. However, frequently 1,25-(OH)2D3 induces hypercalcemia, especially in those patients ingesting large doses of calcium carbonate, precluding the administration of therapeutic doses of 1,25-(OH)2D3.
