Despite the widespread use of caffeine, the neuronal mechanisms underlying its stimulatory effects are not completely understood. By using c-Fos immunohistochemistry as a marker of neuronal activation, we recently showed that stimulant doses of caffeine activate arousal-promoting hypothalamic orexin (hypocretin) neurons.
