Northern Ireland provides a centre for the World Health Organization co-ordinated MONICA Project (multinational monitoring of trends and determinants in cardiovascular disease; World Health Organization 1983). This is a 10-year study which aims to relate trends in incidence (mortality and morbidity) to changes in the levels of the major risk factors measured in three independent community surveys.
