@article{Kunz2004DietaryEO, title={Dietary energetics of the insectivorous Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) during pregnancy and lactation}, author={Thomas H. Kunz and John O. Whitaker and Michael D Wadanoli}, journal={Oecologia}, year={2004}, volume={101}, pages={407-415} }
Stomach content analysis of 20 pregnant (x body mass=13.4 g) and 18 lactating (x body mass=11.5 g) female Tadarida brasiliensis revealed that the diet, expressed as percent volume, consists largely of lepidopterans, coleopterans, hymenopterans, and dipterans, in decreasing order of importance. We found no significant difference in the diet of pregnant and lactating females when expressed as percent volume. However, when expressed as percent frequency, proportionately more pregnant females fed…

Reproductive energetics of the nectar-feeding bat Glossophaga soricina (Phyllostomidae)
- Environmental ScienceJournal of Comparative Physiology B
- 2003
Examination of how nectarivorous bats respond to the energetic challenge of reproduction in pregnant and lactating Glossophaga soricina found that the reduced flight activity of pregnant bats compensated for the increased power requirements of flight, thus resulting in an almost constant daily energy turnover.
REPRODUCTIVE ENERGETICS OF CAPTIVE AND FREE‐RANGING EGYPTIAN FRUIT BATS (ROUSETTUS AEGYPTIACUS)
- Biology
- 2004
It is concluded that the energy costs of Egyptian fruit bats during reproduction are distributed over a relatively long time, similar to those observed in large mammals.
Changes in milk composition during lactation in three species of insectivorous bats
- Biology, MedicineJournal of Comparative Physiology B
- 2004
Comparison of the effect of sampling method on milk composition of T. brasiliensis indicated that fat, dry matter, and energy concentrations increased significantly from pre-dawn to prenoon samples, which may reflect the limited access that lactating females have to free water, as well as need to minimize mass of stored milk during long foraging trips.
Quantitative evaluation of individual food intake by insectivorous vespertilionid bats (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae).

The novel method for the estimation of insects’ biomass consumed by bats based on dry mass of their feces is offered, which confirms the importance of insectivorous bats for ecosystem services.
Dietary energy estimate inferred from fruit preferences of Cynopterus sphinx (Mammalia: Chiroptera: Pteropodidae) in a flight cage in tropical China

From a conservation standpoint, inferences about dietary intake are much more robust when placed within a demographic, temporal and nutritional context. We investigated the dietary cornerstones of…
DIET OF FLAT-HEADED BATS, TYLONYCTERIS PACHYPUS AND T. ROBUSTULA, IN GUANGXI, SOUTH CHINA
- Biology
- 2005
Food habits of Tylonycteris pachypus and T. robustula were examined by fecal analysis in 2 counties of Guangxi, South China, showing clear seasonal variation from spring to autumn and differences in diet between the different geographical areas studied.
FOOD HABITS OF NYCTINOMOPS MACROTIS AT A MATERNITY ROOST IN NEW MEXICO, AS INDICATED BY ANALYSIS OF GUANO

This study documents an unusually varied diet, as previous studies indicated that big free-tailed bats fed almost exclusively on moths.
DIETARY VARIATION OF BRAZILIAN FREE-TAILED BATS LINKS TO MIGRATORY POPULATIONS OF PEST INSECTS
- Biology, Environmental Science

Food habits of Brazilian free-tailed bats at 3 colonies in central Texas over 3 summers suggest that crop pests comprise a substantial portion of the bats' diet and that bats provide valuable natural pest control services.

Energetics of Pregnancy and Lactation in Freeranging Little Brown Bats (Myotis lucifugus)

The large amount of energy devoted to foraging by this aerial-feeding bat may partially explain the low proportion of energy it allocates to tissue production and milk export.

It is suggested that increased resource availability allowed selective feeding in adult bats during July, as predicted by presy selection models, however, reduced discriminatory abilities may prevent similar levels of prey selection in juveniles.

Using doubly labeled water to measure carbon dioxide production and water flux during pregnancy and lactation in free-ranging big brown bats, Eptesicus fuscus, it is calculated that the average requirement for assimilated energy was 48.9 and 105.1 kJ/day for pregnant and lactating females, respectively.

Emigration of males from nursery colonies in late spring and early summer and emigration of adult females soon after young were weaned may provide a mechanism to reduce competition for available food.
The effect of reproductive condition on the foraging behavior of female hoary bats, Lasiurus cinereus

Foraging time increased between early lactation and fledging and then declined as the young became independent, suggesting that maximizing energy intake throughout lactation may not be the optimal strategy because storing excess energy increases flight cost and may reduce foraging efficiency.
