The icefish Neosalanx pseudotaihuensis (Salangidae) is a small transparent fish with a life cycle of about one year. This fish species is increasingly introduced to waterbodies in China in order to enhance fish production. Diet of the icefish was investigated from the 1996 cohort (June 1996–April 1997) in Xujiahe Reservoir (central China). The gut content analysis of 1001 specimens (size range: 21–72 mm in total length) revealed that the major components of the icefish diet were Leptodora…
Seasonal changes in icefish diel feeding patterns in Lake Chaohu, a large shallow eutrophic lake of China
TLDR
The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder, and is the first comparative study on prey selection between male and female icefish.
Environmental effect on diet, fecundity and condition of an endangered fish Neosalanx reganius (Osmeriformes) in the Chikugo Estuary, in the upper Ariake Bay, Japan
TLDR
The oligohaline upper Chikugo estuary provides important feeding and spawning grounds for the fish with sufficient prey abundance and turbidity maximum that seemed advantageous for feeding and spawn of N. reganius in the Chikuga estuary.
太湖贡湖湾鲚(Coilia ectenes taihuensis Yen et Lin)食物组成的季节变化
Coilia ectenes taihuensis Yen et Lin(C.ectenes) is the dominant fish species in Lake Taihu, and the catch has been increasing with the eutrophication of Lake Taihu. In this study,in order to
Seasonal dynamics of rotifer in a seasonal fishing moratorium lake — Lake Erhai,Yunnan Province,China
TLDR
Rotifers were dominated by large omnivorous A.priodonta, which showed a bimodal seasonal distribution pattern and affected not only the predation pressure on rotifers, but also competitive pressure on rotation through influencing the community structure of Cladocera.
Effects of fish introduction and eutrophication on the cladoceran community in Lake Fuxian, a deep oligotrophic lake in southwest China
Fish introduction and eutrophication are important disturbances to aquatic ecosystems, especially to oligotrophic plateau lakes that are generally considered to be very vulnerable ecosystems.
Diverse dietary strategy of lake anchovy Coilia ectenes taihuensis in lakes with different trophic status
TLDR
Dietary strategy of lake anchovy, a non-migratory omnivorous fish, in two freshwater lakes with distinctly different trophic states is studied to reveal its trophics niche shifts and population- and individual- level feeding habits plasticity using stable isotope analysis.
Predation pressure induced by seasonal fishing moratorium changes the dynamics of subtropical Cladocera populations
TLDR
Cladocerans showed a bimodal seasonal distribution linked to variations in predation pressure induced by the seasonal fishing moratorium in Lake Erh, and peaked in the middle of the fishing moratorium, coinciding with a clear water phase.
Herbivory of Omnivorous Fish Shapes the Food Web Structure of a Chinese Tropical Eutrophic Lake: Evidence from Stable Isotope and Fish Gut Content Analyses
TLDR
The results suggest that carbon from macrophytes with associated periphyton may constitute an important food resource for omnivorous fish, and this may strongly affect the feeding niche and the strength of the top-down trophic cascade between fish and zooplankton in the restored, macrophyte-dominated basin of the lake.

Food and feeding behaviour of a planktivorous cyprinid, Pelecus cultratus (L.), in a shallow eutrophic lake, Neusiedler See (Austria)
TLDR
Comparison of the relative abundance of the zooplankton species in the stomach to the lake indicated that prey visibility was a key factor in determining the prey selectivity by Pelecus, and it seems likely that the persistence of the Leptodora population in Neusiedler See can be attributed to negligible predation pressure on the smaller sized individuals of this species.
Changes in abundance of the icefish Neosalanx pseudotaihuensis Zhang (Salangidae) and the impact on the zooplankton community of Xujiahe Reservoir, central China
TLDR
The results document that the population of this annual fish is very variable and high biomass of the fish could exert a pronounced effect on the zooplankton community.
The food and feeding habits of young perch, Perca fluviatilis, in Windermere
TLDR
Comparison of the maximum carapace width of Daphnia eaten with that of the plankton revealed that smaller specimens were taken by juvenile perch in July, but they tended to select larger organisms during August and September.

Food supply and prey selection in planktivorous cyprinidae

  • 2004
TLDR
The possibility that the species composition of zooplankton is regulated was indicated only in the fish's positively abundance-dependent preference for the prey types and restricted to only a few plankter species.
Taxonomy, biology and abundance of icefishes, or noodlefishes (Salangidae), in the Yellow River estuary of the Bohai Sea, China

A clear outline of taxonomy, zoogeography aod biology of icefishes in the Yellow River estuary of the Bohai Sea was established.
Distribution patterns of vertebrate and invertebrate planktivores in Newfoundland lakes with evidence of predator–prey and competitive interactions
TLDR
Analyses of distributional patterns (presence or absence data) of the planktivores in 15 Avalon lakes indicated that the distributions of both Chaoborus spp.
Differential zooplankton feeding behaviors, selectivities, and community impacts of two planktivorous fishes
TLDR
The results suggest that the type of planktivore, and not simply the presence or abundance of plankTivores in a system, can determine zooplankton community structure.
Ontogeny of prey attack behaviour in larvae and juveniles of three European cyprinids
  • J. Wanzenböck
  • Environmental Science
    Environmental Biology of Fishes
  • 2004
TLDR
No differences in capture efficiencies were found among the three cyprinid species, indicating that attack behaviour is unlikely to function as a basic mechanism leading to differences in prey selectivity among the investigated species.
Quantitative measurement of food selection
TLDR
Modified versions of both indices are proposed which are based directly on the rates of decrement (mortality) of the food due to feeding, and are independent of the relative abundance.
