Austrodoris kerguelenensis feeds on sponges of the genera Rosella and Scolymastra; Aegires albus, on Hexactinellida (Porifera); and Tritoniella belli, probably on non-determined synascidians. Bathydoris clavigera and B. hodgsoni are omnivorous.
Anatomical and taxonomical studies of the Antarctic nudibranchsAustrodoris kerguelenensis (Bergh, 1884) andA. georgiensis n. sp. from the Scotia Sea
TLDR
During the expedition “ANTARTIDA 8611” to the Scotia Sea, several specimens ofAustrodoris were collected and one of them shows some anatomical features that allowed it to be identified as a new species, which is named A. georgiensis. Expand
The morphology and taxonomy of the Antarctic species of Tritonia Cuvier, 1797 (Nudibranchia: Dendronotoidea)
TLDR
Only Tritonia antarctica is a true High Antarctic species, with a distribution around the continental shelf, Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia, and T. vorax is confined to South Georgia and Subantarctic waters. Expand
Cytotoxic haplosclerid sponges preferred: a field study on the diet of the dotted sea slug Peltodoris atromaculata (Doridoidea: Nudibranchia)
TLDR
One remarkable feature of the exclusive feeding of Peltodoris on Petrosia and Haliclona is that both sponges share specific fulvinol-like polyacetylenes that show cytotoxic activity in bioassays, potential benefits and evolutionary aspects of this trophic specialization are discussed. Expand
Giant embryos and hatchlings of Antarctic nudibranchs (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Heterobranchia)
TLDR
Egg masses of B. hodgsoni and D. kerguelenensis were collected over multiple years in the eastern Weddell Sea and the South Shetland Islands, and here new data are provided about egg mass characteristics and ontogeny using histological techniques. Expand
Molecular phylogeny of the Euthyneura (Mollusca, Gastropoda) with spacial focus on Opisthobranchia as a framework for reconstruction of evolution of diet
TLDR
The present study presents the currently most extensive analyses on opisthobranch phylogeny including 58 species from all major subgroups and finds Herbivory is found as the most likely ancestral diet of Euthyneura while carnivory probably evolved several times independently in different clades. Expand
Some observations on the diet and distribution of Nudibranchs at Signy Island, Antarctica
TLDR
The physical size of Antarctic nudibranchs may have important implications to the type of prey and feeding strategy used by different species. Expand
Defensive glandular structures in opisthobranch molluscs : From histology to ecology
TLDR
New results on defensive glandular structures as well as a compilation of literature data in sea slugs (Opisthobranchia, Gastropoda, Mollusca) are presented and an hypothetical scenario relating chemical ecology to histology is proposed. Expand
Chemical ecology of the Antarctic nudibranch Bathydoris hodgsoni Eliot, 1907: defensive role and origin of its natural products.
TLDR
To test this defensive hypothesis for hodgsonal, a series of experiments using the sympatric omnivorous seastar Odontaster validus Koehler, 1906 as a potential predator revealed that natural concentrations of hodGsonal elicit significant feeding deterrent responses in O. validus. Expand
Chemical ecology and origin of defensive compounds in the Antarctic nudibranch Austrodoris kerguelenensis (Opisthobranchia: Gastropoda)
TLDR
It is suggested that A. kerguelenensis derives the bioactive diacylglycerides by de novo biosynthesis rather than by sequestration from its sponge diet, since the mollusk does not contain active metabolites in the viscera, and neither the active compounds nor precursors were detected in the sponge diet. Expand
The infauna of three widely distributed sponge species (Hexactinellida and Demospongiae) from the deep Ekström Shelf in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica
TLDR
The results of the cluster-analysis show significant differences between infauna communities and a unique species composition for single sponge species in Antarctic zoobenthos. Expand

Distribution and food of the nudibranchiate mollusca of the south of the Isle of Man.

ON THE FEEDING HABITS AND THE MORPHOLOGY AND MODE OF FUNCTIONING OF THE ALIMENTARY CANAL IN SOME LITTORAL DORID NUDIBRANCHIATE MOLLUSCA
TLDR
The absence of particulate matter in the food is reflected in a simplification of the gut, notably in the absence of a caecum and a reduction in the secretion of mucus. Expand
