We apply the concept of superradiance introduced by Dicke in 1954 to the OH molecule 1612 MHz spectral line often used for the detection of masers in circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. As the detection of 1612 MHz OH masers in the outer shells of envelopes of these stars implies the existence of a population inversion and a high level of velocity coherence, and that these are two necessary requirements for superradiance, we investigate whether superradiance can also happen in these… Expand

Dicke’s Superradiance in Astrophysics
It is generally assumed that in the interstellar medium much of the emission emanating from atomic and molecular transitions within a radiating gas happen independently for each atom or molecule, butExpand
New evidence for Dicke's superradiance in the 6.7 GHz methanol spectral line in the interstellar medium
We present new evidence for superradiance in the methanol 6.7 GHz spectral line for three different star-forming regions: S255IR-NIRS3, G24.329+0.144, and Cepheus A. Our analysis shows that some ofExpand
Astronomical masers and Dicke’s superradiance
We consider the radiation properties and processes of a gas with a population inversion using the formalism based on the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We focus on the maser action and Dicke'sExpand
Explaining fast radio bursts through Dicke's superradiance
Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), characterized by strong bursts of radiation intensity at radio wavelengths lasting on the order of a millisecond, have yet to be firmly associated with a family, orExpand
Explaining recurring maser flares in the ISM through large-scale entangled quantum mechanical states
The evidence of superradiance in this source suggests the existence of entangled quantum mechanical states, involving a very large number of molecules, over distances of up to a few kilometers in the interstellar medium. Expand
Triggered superradiance and fast radio bursts
In this paper we develop a model for fast radio bursts (FRBs) based on triggered superradiance (SR) and apply it to previously published data of FRB 110220 and FRB 121102. We show how a young pulsarExpand
A new model for the multiple stellar populations within Terzan 5
Recent observational studies have demonstrated that the complex stellar system Terzan 5 (Ter 5) harbours multiple populations of stars. Several models have attempted to interpret the large ageExpand
A Living Theory Catalogue for Fast Radio Bursts
At present, we have almost as many theories to explain Fast Radio Bursts as we have Fast Radio Bursts observed. This landscape will be changing rapidly with CHIME/FRB, recently commissioned inExpand
Interacting superradiance samples: modified intensities and timescales, and frequency shifts
We consider the interaction between distinct superradiance (SR) systems and use the dressed state formalism to solve the case of two interacting two-atom SR samples at resonance. We show that theExpand
A simple relationship for the spectro-temporal structure of bursts from FRB 121102
We consider a simple dynamical and relativistic model to explain the spectro-temporal structure often displayed by repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs). We show how this model can account for theExpand

Dicke's Superradiance in Astrophysics. I. The 21 cm Line
We have applied the concept of superradiance introduced by Dicke in 1954 to astrophysics by extending the corresponding analysis to the magnetic dipole interaction characterizing the atomic hydrogenExpand
Monitoring of OH maser emission from late-type stars
Eight OH--IR stars have been monitored at the satellite- and main-line frequencies of OH. We have addressed problems relating to the pump mechanisms responsible for the maser inversion, the degree ofExpand
Evolution of 1612-MHz maser emission in expanding circumstellar shells
Observations show that 1612-MHz masers of OH/IR stars can fade on a time-scale of a decade. This fading is probably associated with the switch from rapid mass loss, which is ultimately linked with anExpand
Structure of stellar hydroxyl masers
This paper presents the results of two spectral-line very long baseline (VLB) interferometric experiments on stellar OH masers. These masers are usually associated with long-period variable stars,Expand
OH-IR stars. II. A model for the 1612 MHz masers
A model is presented for the 1612 MHz OH masers associated with infrared stars. Its principal conclusions are as follows. The central stars are losing approx.3 x 10/sup -5/ M/sub sun/yr/sup -1/, andExpand
Time variations in the OH microwave and infrared emission from late-type stars
Abstract : The OH microwave and infrared variability of 14 OH/IR stars were studied. Many of the sources show periodic flux variations between 1 and 10 micrometer and in the 1612-MHz OH lines with noExpand
The Effect of 53 μm IR Radiation on 18 cm OH Megamaser Emission
OH megamasers (OHMs) emit primarily in the main lines at 1667 and 1665 MHz and differ from their Galactic counterparts due to their immense luminosities, large line widths, and 1667/1665 MHz fluxExpand
OH-IR stars. I. Physical properties of circumstellar envelopes
A theoretical model of the circumstellar envelope which surrounds a OH-IR star is developed. The circumstellar gas is ejected by radiation pressure which acts on dust grains that condense in theExpand
Anomalous Intensity Ratios of the Interstellar Lines of OH in Absorption and Emission
WE have previously found1 intensity ratios of the four microwave lines of OH in disagreement with the theoretical and laboratory ratios2 of 1 : 5 : 9 : 1 for the lines at 1,612, 1,665, 1,667 andExpand
Constraints on OH Megamaser Excitation from a Survey of OH Satellite Lines
We report the results of a full-Stokes survey of all four 18 cm OH lines in 77 OH megamasers (OHMs) using the Arecibo Observatory. This is the first survey of OHMs that included observations of theExpand
