BACKGROUND The unadjusted annual mortality rate among prevalent Dutch dialysis patients increased from 1981 to 1992. Part of this increase may be attributed to the ageing of the dialysis population, but hardly any data were available on other important prognostic features of new Dutch dialysis patients, such as co-morbidity and other aspects of their clinical condition.
