OBJECTIVE Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is one of the potentially life-threatening complications in ascitic cirrhotic patients with a mortality rate ranging between 30 and 50%. The improved survival might be explained by a more rapid diagnosis and treatment.
