THE PROLIFERATION of new technologies has significantly increased the complexity of human designed systems. Nowadays, complex technological systems are embedded, i.e., they contain tightly coupled hardware and software systems. Typical examples are controlled systems, such as manufacturing plants, aircraft, and spacecraft.
