Background: Self-reported questionnaires are a common method used in identifying individuals with ankle instability. Recently a study illustrated the singular use of any of the most frequently utilized questionnaires failed to significantly predict ankle stability status. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to present information related to the development of the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI). Methods: Volunteers (n = 278; 125 males, 153 females, 19.8 ± 1.4 years…

Responsiveness of the Brazilian IdFAI questionnaire in patients with chronic ankle instability.
TLDR
The Brazilian IdFAI questionnaire is a patient-reported outcome measure sensitive to clinical changes in individuals with chronic ankle instability and can be used as an identification of patients with CAI, and as a parameter to verify clinical changes of clinical trials or therapeutic interventions in the population withCAI.

Reliability and Validity of a New Questionnaire Created to Establish the Presence of Functional Ankle Instability: The IdFAI
TLDR
The IdFAI is a simple, valid, reliable questionnaire that can be used to categorize an individual’s FAI status and test–retest reliability ranged from 0.81 to 0.94 for the questionnaire factors and was 0.92 for the overall questionnaire.
Critical review of self-reported functional ankle instability measures: a follow up.
Validity and Reliability of the Malay Version of the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI-M) Questionnaire among Malaysian University Athletes
TLDR
The Malay version of the IdFAI (IdFAI-M) questionnaire is a reliable and valid instrument that can be readily utilised to subjectively assess ankle instability.

TLDR
The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of chronic ankle instability and related symptoms of ankle sprain in a student dance population and educate dancers, instructors, and medical staff of the importance of recognizing CAI and seeking medical care for ankle sprains and their residual symptoms.

Development and reliability of the ankle instability instrument.
TLDR
The high reliability of the Ankle Instability Instrument shows that self-reporting of ankle symptoms is a feasible, appropriate way to obtain information on the presence of instability symptoms, and is a first step in recognizing a more objective way of identifying patients suffering from functional ankle instability.
Critical Review of Self-Reported Functional Ankle Instability Measures
TLDR
No single measure was able to predict if individuals met the minimally accepted criteria for FAI, however, a significantly accurate prediction of ankle stability status was produced by combining the CAIT and AII.
Evidence of Validity for the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM)
TLDR
The FAAM is a reliable, responsive, and valid measure of physical function for individuals with a broad range of musculoskeletal disorders of the lower leg, foot, and ankle.
Ankle instability is associated with balance impairments: a meta-analysis.
TLDR
FAI is associated with impaired balance and it is recommended that further research should establish their clinical validity and clinical cutoff scores.
Reliability and Sensitivity of the Foot and Ankle Disability Index in Subjects With Chronic Ankle Instability.
TLDR
The FADi and FADI Sport appear to be reliable in detecting functional limitations in subjects with CAI, sensitive to differences between healthy subjects and subjects with chronic ankle instability, and responsive to improvements in function after rehabilitation in subjectsWith CAI.
The chronic ankle instability scale: clinimetric properties of a multidimensional, patient-assessed instrument.
Inclusion criteria when investigating insufficiencies in chronic ankle instability.
TLDR
There is a lack of consensus across studies regarding what actually constitutes ankle instability, and it is evident that the majority of studies use very different inclusion criteria, which leads to a nonhomogenous population and to difficulties when comparing results across studies.
Kinesthesia Is Not Affected by Functional Ankle Instability Status.
TLDR
Threshold-to-detection of passive motion scores did not differ in uninjured ankles and those with functional instability; however, bracing with either the Ankle Lok or Air-Stirrup decreased the ability to detect passive motion when compared with the no-tape (unbraced) condition.
Balance training for persons with functionally unstable ankles.
TLDR
This study suggests that balance training is an effective means of improving joint proprioception and single-leg standing ability in subjects with unstable and nonimpaired ankles.
