ABSTRACT {Continue on reverse if necessary and identify by block number) EPDM designates an elastomer that is a polyolefin terpolymer. EPDM elastomers are attractive candidates for underwater acoustical applications. In this work, the formula of EPDM compounds was initially adjusted to produce a material with good bondability and strength. The relationships between the physical and acoustical properties and each formula ingredient were investigated. Long-term properties such as fluid compatibility and environmental resistance were also studied. A quality-control program has been developed, and the variables necessary to control mixing have been studied. The resulting formulation, called EPDM-RLE has good bondability and strength, excellent acoustical fluid compatibility and environmental resistance, and very good acoustical properties.
