We propose an extracellular optical recording configuration for neural signal recording by using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). The SPR method is a nonlabeling technique, so that this makes great advantages for neuronal signal detection over conventional optical approach based on voltage-sensitive dyes: for example, a measurement time is not limited by fluorescence decay, and neurons are safe from potential toxicity of fluorescence dyes.
