Abstract Methods for the determination of urinary creatine as creatinine are based on the assumption that under appropriate conditions creatine is quantitatively converted to creatinine. We have checked this assumption and found it untenable. Studies on solutions containing creatine and creatinine in various proportions show that in the presence of an excess of creatinine a considerable fraction of the creatine content escapes conversion.
