  • Inelastic electron scattering is compared with optical absorption as a means of determining optical properties. Examples are given of some direct comparisons between the two methods in the case of LiF and Te. In addition the utility of variable momentum transfer in revealing the physical nature of an excitation is illustrated using core excitations in Te, Na, and K.
