The virion envelope glycoprotein gp85 confers a high degree of subgroup specificity for interaction with distinct cell receptors. Specific subgroups of gp85 have been associated with a cytopathic virus-cell interaction, most likely resulting from reduced resistance to superinfection, which allows the buildup of excessive amounts of viral DNA.
