In the late 1970s biochemical tests of fetal wellbeing or placental function tests (PFT) were among the most widely investigative tools in clinical obstetrics. Today they have been almost entirely abandoned: totally so in the US, to a lesser extent in Europe. Why is this, and do such tests have any remaining use or potential future application?
