Thrombin is a specific serine protease of the blood coagulation cascade that cleaves circulating fibrinogen to fibrin monomer and then polymerizes to form fibrin. In addition to clotting disorders, thrombin can be used as a biomarker for tumor diagnosis. Thrombin also plays a major role in vasospasm, which can often result in cerebral ischemia and infarction.
