We present the detection of supermassive black holes (BHs) in two Virgo ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), VUCD3 and M59cO. We use adaptive optics assisted data from the Gemini/NIFS instrument to derive radial velocity dispersion profiles for both objects. Mass models for the two UCDs are created using multi-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging, including the modeling of mild color gradients seen in both objects. We then find a best-fit stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L) and BH mass by combining…
The Black Hole in the Most Massive Ultracompact Dwarf Galaxy M59-UCD3
We examine the internal properties of the most massive ultracompact dwarf galaxy (UCD), M59-UCD3, by combining adaptive optics assisted near-IR integral field spectroscopy from Gemini/NIFS, and
A 3.5 million Solar masses black hole in the centre of the ultracompact dwarf galaxy fornax UCD3
The origin of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), a class of compact stellar systems discovered two decades ago, still remains a matter of debate. Recent discoveries of central supermassive black holes in
Do ultracompact dwarf galaxies form monolithically or as merged star cluster complexes?
Some ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have elevated observed dynamical V-band massto-light (M/LV) ratios with respect to what is expected from their stellar populations assuming a canonical
The Impact of Stripped Nuclei on the Supermassive Black Hole Number Density in the Local Universe
The recent discovery of super-massive black holes (SMBHs) in the centers of high-mass ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) suggests that at least some UCDs are the stripped nuclear star clusters of
Detection of a 100,000 M ⊙ black hole in M31's Most Massive Globular Cluster: A Tidally Stripped Nucleus
We investigate the presence of a central black hole (BH) in B023-G078, M31's most massive globular cluster. We present high-resolution, adaptive-optics assisted, integral-field spectroscopic
Dynamical Analysis of the Dark Matter and Central Black Hole Mass in the Dwarf Spheroidal Leo I
We measure the central kinematics for the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I using integrated-light measurements and previously published data. We find a steady rise in the velocity dispersion from 300″
A Deep View into the Nucleus of the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy with MUSE. I. Data and Stellar Population Characterization
The center of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) hosts a nuclear star cluster, M54, which is the only galaxy nucleus that can be resolved into individual stars at optical wavelengths.
A Population of Luminous Globular Clusters and Stripped Nuclei with Elevated Mass to Light Ratios around NGC 5128
The dense central regions of tidally disrupted galaxies can survive as ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) that hide among the luminous globular clusters (GCs) in the halo of massive galaxies. An exciting
A search for active galactic nuclei in low-mass compact galaxies
Low-mass compact galaxies (ultracompact dwarfs, UCDs, and compact ellipticals, cEs) populate the stellar size–mass plane between globular clusters and early-type galaxies. Known to be formed either
Upper limits on the presence of central massive black holes in two ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in Centaurus A
The recent discovery of massive black holes (BHs) in the centers of high-mass ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) suggests that at least some are the stripped nuclear star clusters of dwarf galaxies.

Internal Properties of Ultracompact Dwarf Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We present new imaging and spectroscopic observations of six ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, along with reanalyzed data for five Fornax Cluster UCDs. These are the most
Measuring the mass of the central black hole in the bulgeless galaxy NGC 4395 from gas dynamical modeling
NGC 4395 is a bulgeless spiral galaxy, harboring one of the nearest known type 1 Seyfert nuclei. Although there is no consensus on the mass of its central engine, several estimates suggest it to be
The chemical composition of ultracompact dwarf galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax clusters
We present spectroscopic observations of ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters made to measure and compare their stellar populations. The spectra were obtained on the
We present a detailed analysis of high-resolution two-band Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging of 21 ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. The
Constraining ultracompact dwarf galaxy formation with galaxy clusters in the local universe
We compare the predictions of a semi-analytic model for ultracompact dwarf galaxy (UCD) formation by tidal stripping to the observed properties of globular clusters (GCs) and UCDs in the Fornax and
On central black holes in ultra-compact dwarf galaxies
Context. The dynamical mass-to-light (M/L) ratios of massive ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) are about 50% higher than predicted by stellar population models. Aims. Here we investigate the
A supermassive black hole in an ultra-compact dwarf galaxy
Adaptive optics kinematic data of the ultra-compact dwarf galaxy M60-UCD1 that show a central velocity dispersion peak exceeding 100 kilometres per second and modest rotation are reported, implying a large population of previously unrecognized supermassive black holes in other ultra-Compact dwarf galaxies.
The formation of ultracompact dwarf galaxies
Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the Fornax Cluster reveal nearly unresolved 'star-like' objects with redshifts appropriate to the Fornax Cluster. These objects have intrinsic sizes
We present internal velocity dispersions and precise radial velocities for 200 globular clusters (GCs) in M31 that are derived using new high-resolution spectra from MMT/Hectochelle. Of these, 163
The benchmark black hole in NGC 4258: dynamical models from high-resolution two-dimensional stellar kinematics
NGC 4258 is the galaxy with the most accurate (maser-based) determination for the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in its nucleus. In this work we present a two-dimensional mapping of the
